Tarot Guide Me

A One Act Play

by

Brittany Nichols

Character 1: Jade Cornerstone      Uncertain twenty-five-year-old looking for life answers.

Character 2: Lady Leanna           Local Psychic with the knack at getting others’ lives on track.

Scene

Our story starts in Jade Cornerstone’s bedroom, where she is contemplating life. Such strong and compelling questions lead her to a local psychic named Lady Leanna.

Time

This play takes place in the early day hours and extends into the afternoon.

SCENE 1

(Jade is sitting in her window nook of her bedroom overlooking her backyard. Her bedroom is relatively plain with many shelves displayed around the room with a wide variety of books and a writing desk. She drinks her coffee in silence until she can no longer keep her thoughts inside.)

JADE CORNERSTONE

What are you doing Jade!?! All this unhappiness, where is it stemming from?

(She stands from her nook and sits her coffee down on the nearby writing desk)

The answer must be right in front of my face. I have been in this slump for far too long. How much longer can I stand hating every aspect of my day-to-day life? The meaningless friendships, the life sucking job, and the negativity that I am surrounded by is all becoming suffocating. I always said I was meant for great things, but all I do lately is cry and mope around during my free time. Where did happy and ambitious Jade go? The one who wanted to spend her time protesting to save our planet? The one who wanted to write laws and change peoples lives for the better? Right now, she is drowning in this dark pool of depression.

(She starts to pace the room right to left. She turns to look at the many books she owns for some answers. She then turns to look on her desk and the morning newspaper catches her eye.)

Well, if that isn’t a sign from the universe, I don’t know what is.

(She picks the newspaper up from the desk and begins to read it out loud)

Psychic readings for the low price of twenty dollars. Come on down today and let Lady Leanna help guide you in the right direction.

(BLACKOUT – END OF SCENE)

SCENE 2

(Jade enters the office of Lady Leanna. It is decorated in many different shades of purple. Candles can be seen lit all over the room giving off a comforting aroma. A front desk is a few feet from the entry and has a small computer set up with a register. There are plush chairs in a small waiting area and past the entry area there are two chairs around a small table.)

LADY LEANNA

Hello, my friend, welcome to my space of seeking. How can I help you with your journey today?

JADE CORNERSTAONE

I have found myself in this sinking sand pit of uncertainty about what I am doing with my life and I need answers.

LADY LEANNA

My dear, you have come to the right place.

(She walks from behind her entry desk and reaches out her hand to Jade)

Take my hand and follow me this way and I guarantee you will leave this place with a game plan to get you out of this pit you speak of.

(Jade takes Lady Leanna’s hand and they walk to the table)

Have a seat and make yourself comfortable. What is your name love?

(She takes a seat directly across the table from Jade so that they are face to face)

JADE CORNERSTONE

Jade

LADY LEANNA

Jade, I think a basic tarot reading with a clarity spread is going to give you just what you need.

JADE CORNERSTONE

At this point I am willing to try anything.

LADY LEANNA

I am going to need you to focus on your struggles.

(She picks up her deck of cards from the table and begins to lightly shuffle them)

Use every bit of energy within you to ask the cards what it is you need to focus on to achieve your life goals and true happiness. Once you feel as if you have reached a maximum point of focus let me know and we will begin

(Jade closes her eyes and the room is silent aside from the shuffling of the cards)

JADE CORNERSTONE

I am ready Lady Leanna.

LADY LEANNA

Ok Jade I am going to spread these cards in front of you. I am going to need you to look at these cards and draw the one that is calling to you.

JADE CORNERSTONE

I think I can handle that.

LADY LEANNA

Perfect!

(She spreads the cards across the table)

Ok Jade which card is speaking to you?

(Jade stares at the cards and draws one. Lady Leanna lays it face up on the table)

Eight of pentacles, perfect. Now I am going to reshuffle while you continue your focus.

(She shuffles the deck of cards and then draws the first three cards on top. She lays them face up in a horizontal line below the first card)

Three of Cups, Wheel of Fortune, and Justice. Well, Well, Well Jade what a spread we have here. Let me begin with your first card.

(She points to the first card)

This card represents your overall situation. This is the most important card of the four. You have here the Eight of Pentacles. This card represents craftmanship and skill. This tells us that we need to be honing in on our skills and perfecting them. It is a sign that you are close to mastering your craft and should continue pursuing it at all cost.

(She then points at the three cards in a line)

The next three cards focus on solutions to your questions you have been focusing on in your mind. I must say the cards that have been drawn for you look very optimistic.

(She points to the second card)

Three of cups is a symbol of friendships, joy, bounty. This means that support and friendship from others is in your future. You should focus on bonds that mean the most to you or be on the look out for your perfect match in your daily life. Have an open heart to true relationships and the universe will bring them to you.

(She points to the next card)

Your second card is Wheel of Fortune, it represents destiny and change of course. This indicates that big changes are heading your way. You are on the edge of everything working in your favor if you let the wheel take its course.

(She points at the fourth card)

Last, but not least by any means, your third card is Justice. This card represents decisions and Karama. It tells us life changing decisions that have been looming must be made.

JADE CORNERSTONE

Lady Leanna, you have no idea how much you have opened my mind in literally no time at all.

(BLACKOUT – END OF SCENE)

SCENE 3

(Jade is in her bedroom with her phone in her hand.)

JADE CORNERSTONE

Stick to the plan, Jade. It must be done.

(She beings pacing and dialing on her phone)

Hello Mr, Draper?

(silent pause while she waits for an answer)

I am calling to let you know I will not be coming in for my dinner shift tonight. In fact, I will not be returning to work for your place of business and its toxic environment ever again.

(She hangs up the phone and takes a seat at her writing desk)

(BLACKOUT)

(END OF PLAY)*
